John Clark is the author of Beaches of Hawai`i , 6 books on Hawai`i's beaches, published by the University of Hawai`i Press. Also a planning consultant, he has worked on many beach and shoreline projects such as ocean safety pamphlets, videos, and shoreline-related social impact assessments. In 2005, John retired from the City and County of Honolulu with 35 years of public service, 2 years as an ocean lifeguard and 33 years as a firefighter with the Honolulu Fire Department. His last 7 ½ years were as the Deputy Fire Chief.

Tom Dinell, FAICP, Associate

Mr. Dinell founded the Urban and Regional Planning Department at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa, was its chair for many years, and continues to teach part-time. He has worked on planning studies in many areas including public policy, management, affordable housing, and welfare, and served for 8 years as Diocesan Director of Catholic Charities Hawai`i . He earned his Bachelor’s degree in political science at Brown University and his Master’s in public administration at the University of Michigan, and was then a National Institute of Public Affairs Fellow at Harvard University. He is an active member of the American Planning Association and the Urban Land Institute, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP).

Mr. Itamura has nearly 20 years of experience in supervising public opinion and market research surveys in Hawai`i. After co-founding another Honolulu research company, Mr. Itamura opened FAQ Hawai`i in 2002, and has worked on several projects with JMK Associates. FAQ Hawai’i has a call center utilizing the Sawtooth CATI (computer-assisted telephone interviewing) software and uses both SPSS and SAS for data processing.

Mr. Shapiro is one of Hawai`i's foremost housing analysts, frequently appearing in local news media coverage of housing issues. He maintains the Honolulu Board of Realtors' ® database, and has also worked with Title Guaranty to analyze all Neighbor Islands residential transactions. He holds his Bachelor's from Carnegie Institute of Technology and also did graduate work at Carnegie Mellon University.
